With the UK economy growing 0.4% between July and September it is likely that we will see the first interest rate rise in more than a decade at the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee meeting in November.

Market Commentary AugustThe Bank of England cut its growth forecast for the UK from 1.9% to 1.7% for 2017, which is unsurprising given the uncertain economic outlook. The Bank also expect inflation to peak at around 3% later this year. Further evidence of the current economic uncertainty is slowly emerging with sofa retailer DFS noting a significant drop in sales.

Market Commentary JulyInflation eased from 2.9% to 2.6% in July. This has lifted pressure from the Bank of England to increase interest rates for the time being. However, it is worth noting that the average wage increase was 1.8% in May – meaning that wages are falling in real terms.
