Scotland’s largest independent accountancy and business advisory firm, Johnston Carmichael, is looking to the future of the City of Discovery this year as it exhibits at the BioDundee International Conference on Wednesday 12 May.

Established in 1997, BioDundee is a partnership between public, private, academic and third sector organisations which seeks to drive forward the Life Sciences and Healthcare sectors in Dundee and the wider Tayside area, strengthening the region’s position as a key contributor to Scotland’s world-renowned expertise in the field.

BioDundee’s International Conference is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and for the first time will be conducted online as a Virtual Conference. Held in association with AMICULUM and Medtronic, the theme of the event is “Life Sciences and Healthcare: Key Sectors for Economic Recovery”.

Six panel sessions will be held throughout the day, hosted by a number of world-leading names in the Life Sciences and Healthcare arena and covering a variety of topics including ‘Driving Health Technologies in the New Environment’ and ‘What do the next 20 years hold for the Life Sciences and Healthcare Sectors?’. Another panel discussion will reflect on the tremendous progress made in the Dundee region’s Life Sciences and Healthcare sectors over the last 20 years, and the impact this will have on shaping how the city moves forward in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As well as the panel sessions, the conference will feature an exhibition and networking opportunities. Johnston Carmichael is hosting a virtual exhibition stand on the day, where visitors will have the opportunity to speak with expert advisers Dr Mari McCrossan, Innovation Taxes Manager, and Ryan Milne, Business Advisory Manager.

With a PhD in Cell Biology and Virology and two Postdoctoral Research Fellowships under her belt, Mari is deeply immersed in the Life Sciences and Healthcare sector and has extensive experience of working both in academia and business, lending a unique perspective to her work in Research & Development Taxes. Mari completed her undergraduate degree in Biotechnology at the University of Abertay.

Ryan, a Chartered Accountant who studied at the University of Dundee, is Dundee born and bred and has a deep understanding of and passion for the city. Working primarily with clients in the tech space, Ryan sees first-hand the creativity and cutting-edge vision that Dundee has to offer, and that the BioDundee Conference aims to celebrate and promote.

Johnston Carmichael opened its Dundee office in 2019, and since then has put down strong roots in the city. The team has developed close relationships with the local universities and the business community, as well as its clients. The firm has significant expertise in Life Sciences, acting for a number of clients in the sector and local area.

Also among Johnston Carmichael's client base is Dundee-based Intelligent Growth Solutions, whose CEO David Farquhar is speaking at the BioDundee conference.

Dundee Office Head, Jenn Stewart, said:

We’re very excited to be involved with BioDundee this year. Innovation and forward-thinking is required now more than ever, and the conference is the perfect opportunity to exchange ideas, collaborate, and bring that to life. The Tayside region is brimming with potential and we’re here to help unlock it.
