Parents, guardians and advisers

Whether you’re a parent, guardian, career adviser or teacher, your advice and influence is crucial in helping young people make the best choices for their future. Encouraging our team to ‘grow their own way’ is central to our philosophy at Johnston Carmichael, and we focus on ensuring that our people are equipped with the right support and skills to do that. Our values are key to how we operate – Remaining relevant, Leading our future, Standing in other people’s shoes, and Doing the right thing. We aim to foster a culture of openness and progression, so from their very first days with our firm everyone feels respected, valued, and empowered to take ownership of their learning and their career, whilst safe in the knowledge that there will always be someone here to guide them.

What can JC offer young people?

We’re proud to recruit a significant number of trainees across our programmes each year, advising and supporting them to achieve accredited professional qualifications. As well as an alternative career route to university through our JC Futures programmes, we offer both school/college leavers and university graduates the opportunity to work on varied and interesting projects with active clients of the firm, allowing them to develop as trusted business professionals. Each day they’ll be growing and improving their technical skills through relevant, practical learning on the job, as well as working with talented advisers who can share their knowledge and experience.

The breadth and depth of our service provision and sector reach ensures that our students gain experience of a wide variety of businesses, bolstering their knowledge and providing a broad context for their studies.

What support does JC provide?

We encourage a culture of continual development at Johnston Carmichael, at all levels of the business. Our in-house training portal, JC Academy, houses an extensive range of learning and development materials from soft skills through to leadership development programmes.

We provide full support for studies towards professional qualifications, covering the cost of exams and offering paid study leave in advance of these. We also assign Buddies to our students to help them settle in and navigate their first experience of professional life, as well as mentoring opportunities from more senior members of our team. Peer support is also absolutely vital, and we run a two-day Student Induction event so that our trainees can get to know one another and build those relationships with the people who will be undertaking the same journey as them.

What support can I offer?

We encourage parents, carers and advisers to talk through the various options with the young people in their care to help establish the best route for their development and the type of work and qualifications they may wish to pursue, be that accounting, tax, or audit, for example.

You can find out more about the type of work our students undertake in their first year across our various business lines here.
