Market Commentary September 2020

The main UK index slipped into negative territory again in September as fears of a second wave of coronavirus emerged. The threat of further restrictions and localised lockdowns saw the market values of travel and leisure related stocks push the market to a 1.63% retreat from August’s close.

Market Commentary August 2020

It was a tale of two halves for the FTSE 100 index in August. Strong earnings reports saw the main index rise by 4% during the first couple of weeks. However, a combination of new Government travel restrictions on the likes of France, rising coronavirus infections and negative sentiment from the US Federal Reserve on the pace of the US economic recovery, saw most of these gains erased later in the month. The index did however finish 1.12% higher for the period.

Market Commentary July 2020

There was no fourth consecutive monthly gain for the FTSE 100 index as its winning streak came to a halt. Fears of a second wave of COVID-19 being underway in Europe, local lockdowns being imposed and a new two week quarantine requirement on travellers from Spain saw the index retreat by 4.41% for the period. It won’t be me, will it?

I recently received one of the most difficult phone calls I have had from a client, informing me that his son had passed away. We spoke for a few minutes and I offered to help in any way I could, not that I was able to. His son had left behind a wife and two young children and this made me consider my own circumstances and my own family.
