Market Commentary August 2020It was a tale of two halves for the FTSE 100 index in August. Strong earnings reports saw the main index rise by 4% during the first couple of weeks. However, a combination of new Government travel restrictions on the likes of France, rising coronavirus infections and negative sentiment from the US Federal Reserve on the pace of the US economic recovery, saw most of these gains erased later in the month. The index did however finish 1.12% higher for the period.

Market Commentary July 2020There was no fourth consecutive monthly gain for the FTSE 100 index as its winning streak came to a halt. Fears of a second wave of COVID-19 being underway in Europe, local lockdowns being imposed and a new two week quarantine requirement on travellers from Spain saw the index retreat by 4.41% for the period. It won’t be me, will it?I recently received one of the most difficult phone calls I have had from a client, informing me that his son had passed away. We spoke for a few minutes and I offered to help in any way I could, not that I was able to. His son had left behind a wife and two young children and this made me consider my own circumstances and my own family.

Market Commentary June 2020The main UK index recorded a hat trick of positive month on month closes as at the end of June. Whilst the index has recovered from the low levels seen in March, it is still some way off pre-COVID-19 levels of around 7,600 witnessed in February this year. With economic demand subdued and oil and financial stocks making up a large constituent part of the index, it’s understandable as to why this is the case.
