Top tips to filling out your trainee application
In his last blog post Ryan shared some top tips on how to make the most of careers fair. This week, ahead of our application deadlines, Ryan gives advice on to make your trainee application stand out from the crowd.
My top five tips for creating an application that stands out are...
- Do your research – After attending the careers events, you should have a clear mind as to which companies you want to apply to – don’t just apply to one place but similarly it’s not a good idea to apply to every organisation in the area. Research the firms you want to apply for and establish what criteria each of them are looking for from their applicants. Use the specific words and skills they are looking for and adapt for every application you make as this will allow you to show not only that you have researched the company but also demonstrates that you have the relevant skills they are looking for.
- Be different – Remember that the recruiters will be looking over a high volume of applications so make your CV and application stand out as you want them to remember you. This doesn’t mean you should be writing in fancy pink font and have photos everywhere; the key is to think about what makes you different as a person to anyone else!
- Link experiences to skills – While it is important that your results are reflected on your application/CV, one key aspect that any employer looks for are examples of times where you demonstrated the skills they want from their candidates. Your application or CV will shine through the rest if you spend time refining your application to include concise descriptions of the skills you have gained through any experience you have. This is not restricted to just work related experiences, look to hobbies and other interests you may have.
- Be proactive – Employers like potential candidates to show they are proactive from an early stage. Simple tricks often make big differences: submitting your application a week before the deadline instead of the day it is due; looking for work experience opportunities as early as possible; follow up with anyone you have met at previous events and making sure you are available for the next stage of the application process.
- Use the careers service – No-one is able to write the best CVs and applications at first attempt. Go speak to the professionals! They are there to help you whether that be getting those first few words at the start or asking them to have a quick read through before you submit your application, the range of services they can offer can be valuable and are completely free!
