The Scottish Parliament and Scottish Government receive new powers from today, 23 May 2016, through the Scotland Act 2016.

This opens the way for legislation to be drafted in various areas, including equal opportunities and transport. One priority is for legislation to be introduced to ensure gender balance on the boards of Scottish public bodies. Another immediate priority will be to attract more international flights to Scotland through introduction of Scotland’s equivalent to Air Passenger Duty.

Further tax powers, including the ability to set income tax rates and thresholds will take practical effect further down the line.
