Top UK accountancy and business advisory firm Johnston Carmichael has strengthened its leadership team with a senior promotion in its Newcastle office.

Glen Small becomes VAT and Indirect Tax Director after joining the firm as a Senior Manager in 2022.

Based in Newcastle, where the firm opened a city centre office early this year, Glen works with clients across several key sectors, including construction and property, engineering and manufacturing, energy, infrastructure and sustainability (EIS) and financial services

A Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA), Glen was awarded the Chartered Institute of Taxation North East England Prize for the highest overall score achieved by newly qualified CTA members in 2019.

Glen said: “It’s highly rewarding to be joining Johnston Carmichael’s leadership team as the firm continues to expand in the North East. As a large independent firm, we are perfectly positioned to help local businesses achieve their growth ambitions.

“I am looking forward to building on our presence and playing a key role in our continued growth in the region.”

Glen’s promotion is among seven at leadership level across the business, and part of 55 promotions effective this month. The latest appointments bring the total number promoted at Johnston Carmichael this year to 143.

Martin Osler, Chief People Officer, Johnston Carmichael, said: “We have an inclusive culture where we encourage everyone to be a leader of their work and their learning.

“Our Leadership Programme challenges our people to think differently about themselves and their performance and to reflect on how they can achieve their career ambitions while embedding a high-performance philosophy in our firm. Glen exemplies these principles.

“Congratulations to everyone who achieved promotion in our firm this year and we look forward to seeing them help to sustain our success.”

Glen’s promotion is the second senior appointment in recent weeks in Johnston Carmichael’s Newcastle office, which also welcomed Paul Shields as partner. Paul has more than 25 years of experience of advising businesses across the North East.
