What drew you to Johnston Carmichael, and what excites you most about your role as Private Client Tax Director?
Johnston Carmichael is a firm where people truly have a stake in the business. That ownership mindset means we have the opportunity to shape the firm’s future, and that’s something I find incredibly motivating. The decision to open a Newcastle office also showed a real commitment to the North East, an area I believe in and want to help thrive. Being part of that journey, supporting local businesses and individuals, is hugely exciting.
What do you believe sets Johnston Carmichael apart from other firms in terms of client service and support?
Collaboration is at the heart of what we do. In professional services, there can sometimes be a tendency for individuals to hold onto client relationships too tightly, but at Johnston Carmichael, we take a different approach. We share knowledge and expertise across teams to ensure clients get the best possible advice. That openness and willingness to work together is what makes the difference.
The tax landscape is constantly changing – what trends or challenges do you think will shape the future for your clients?
With technology transforming the economy at pace, the big question is: who will be the taxpayers of the future? And what will governments need to spend money on? Striking the right balance between raising revenue and supporting innovation and growth will be a critical challenge. Helping clients navigate those shifts and plan ahead is a key part of my role.
Tell us about the Newcastle team and why you enjoy working with them?
We’ve built a fantastic team here in Newcastle, full of talented and committed individuals who go the extra mile for our clients. Every firm will say they put clients first, but at Johnston Carmichael, it’s something we truly live by! That shared mindset makes it an exciting and rewarding place to work.
What’s the one piece of advice you find yourself consistently giving clients when it comes to planning their finances?
Start early and keep your plans under regular review. Life and business move quickly, and the best financial plans evolve with changing circumstances.
What makes the North East a good place to do business?
The people. Success in business always requires hard work, but the people I support here have a real sense of perspective and humour. It makes the day job so much more enjoyable.
What do you find most rewarding about your role?
I get to dig into complex tax matters while also building strong relationships with my clients. That’s the part I enjoy most; understanding their individual needs, helping them navigate challenges, and knowing they trust me to guide them through. It’s really rewarding.
What advice would you give to someone starting out a career in accountancy?
Believe in yourself. It’s a profession where confidence grows with experience, so trust in your ability and be open to learning along the way.
What is your proudest career moment?
I spent 37 years at my previous firm, and I'm really proud of helping to grow the team from 20 people when I joined in 1987, to 200 people by the time I left. Now, I’m proud to be part of Johnston Carmichael, helping to build our presence in the North East and supporting businesses across the region.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
For me, there’s nothing better than a long walk with my wife and our dog – it’s the perfect way to clear my head and recharge. I also love spending time with our children and getting lost in a good book.
