EU, non-EU EEA and Swiss citizens

You and your family can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to continue living in the UK after 30 June 2021.

The deadline for applications is 30 June 2021 and if you have not already done so, and this applies to you, we’d recommend that you submit your application now. EEA includes the EU countries plus Iceland, Leichtenstein and Norway. You do not need to apply if you have either of the following immigration approvals already in place: indefinite leave to enter the UK or indefinite leave to remain in the UK; or if you have British or Irish citizenship (including dual citizenship).

Instances where you do not need to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme

You do not need to apply if you have either of the following immigration approvals already in place: indefinite leave to enter the UK or indefinite leave to remain in the UK; or if you have British or Irish citizenship (including dual citizenship).

If you work in the UK but do not live here

If you work in the UK but do not live here (i.e. you are classed as a “frontier worker”) you do not need to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme.

Travelling for Work

For individuals who travel from the UK to work in an EU country, you will be covered by the Withdrawal Agreement if you are a UK national lawfully residing in another EU country by the end of the transition period on 31 December 2020.

You will broadly continue to have the same entitlements to work, study and access public services and benefits as before the UK left the EU. You may need to apply locally for residence status, confirming you were already resident in the EU country you live in before 31 December 2020 and will have until at least 30 June 2021 to do this.

For more details, please bookmark this Government's guidance page here. This will be kept up to date as more details develop.

Should you return to the UK, your rights to live, work and access benefits and services in the UK has not changed.

UK National Insurance

You might be able to pay UK National Insurance while you’re working abroad, depending on where you’re working and how long for. This will help protect your state pension and entitlements to other benefits and allowances. Visit this dedicated page on the Government's website to find out.
