Chris joined the Newcastle office of Johnston Carmichael in December 2024, having worked at the Newcastle office of Azets and Tait Walker for 37 years. Chris headed up the private client tax team in Newcastle.

He had overall responsibility for managing the compliance function for self assessment, but his main area for many years has been advisory work. Chris qualified as a chartered accountant and as a chartered tax advisor, and so is well placed to advise on owner managed businesses. His background enables him to advise on the mix of both personal tax and corporate tax. Also as he is from a farming family, Chris advises a number of farms on tax matters. He acts for a number of property businesses, and has advised on structuring for them.

In respect of private client work, Chris deals with a wide variety of planning in respect of capital gains tax, inheritance tax and trusts. This includes preparation of Forms IHT 400 and IHT 100.

The final areas of work that come within the orbit of Chris relate to business structuring, reorganisations, disposals and also includes family investment companies.

For relaxation, Chris likes to spend time with his family, and can often be found walking his dog. He enjoys reading and is active in his local church.
