Market Commentary November 2018With the possibility of the Brexit deal agreed by Theresa May and the EU being voted down by Parliament, the FTSE 100 index struggled to gain any momentum and slipped further closing the month at 6,980.24.

Market Commentary September 2018The first week of September saw the FTSE 100 slip to a five month low of 7,383 as the pound fell amid concerns over Brexit. The index recovered from this low to close the month at 7,510.20. This recovery from the low largely driven by rising oil prices.
In economic news, GDP grew 0.6% in the second quarter following on from the hottest summer in a number of years. This stronger than expected figure keeps the UK economy on track to deliver growth of 1.3% for 2018.

Market Commentary - AugustThe UK economy is facing an unusual level of uncertainty because of Brexit. This uncertainty primarily stems from the yet to be defined relationship between the UK and the EU but also from the economy’s response to the new framework once it emerges. The UK government’s White Paper has failed to unite the government or Parliament, leaving open an entire spectrum of possible outcomes.

Market Commentary - JulyThe UK economy grew 0.2% for the three month period to the end of May. Many analysts believe this shows that the slow start to the year was attributable to the poor weather rather than a deteriorating economic background. Inflation held steady in June at 2.4% in spite of rising energy costs. Against the improving economic backdrop, the Bank of England voted unanimously to raise the base rate of interest from 0.50% to 0.75%.
