Johnston Carmichael recruitment manager pays Kiltwalk tribute to her dad
A Johnston Carmichael recruitment manager is stepping out for suicide prevention services at this weekend’s Edinburgh Kiltwalk, in memory of her late father.
Laura Mackenzie, who is originally from Uttoxeter, but has lived in Edinburgh for 18 years, is undertaking the capital’s 20-mile Mighty Stride.
She is raising vital funds for the YESS (Your Emotional Support Services) charity based in Uttoxeter, as well as awareness of the help that is available for those with mental health needs.
YESS, which operates throughout the Midlands, provides emotional support and opportunities for all those facing mental health challenges. Its services are available to all ages, from children and young people to adults.
Laura said: “This year I am taking on the 20-mile Edinburgh Kiltwalk on Sunday 15 September in remembrance of my fantastic dad who unfortunately died of suicide last February at the age of 72.
“Dad was really well known in the local community. A former business owner in the town, he was the life and soul of the party, and full of stories – he even had a column in a local magazine.
“In 2018, I lost my mum suddenly to pneumonia and sepsis after a failed kidney transplant.
She was the love of his life, and he never recovered from the loss. After COVID hit and with the loss of my wonderful mum, he became anxious and depressed and took the hard decision to end his life.
“I was shocked and saddened that he didn't reach out for help sooner even though we tried so hard to get him help.
“Your Emotional Support Service’s fabulous group of counsellors and wellbeing practitioners could have made a difference if we’d had the chance to intervene.”
Kiltwalk is one of the UK’s biggest mass participation charity events and offers a choice of four events annually, taking place in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee and Edinburgh. Walkers raise funds for the charities of their choice with every penny raised going towards helping those in need.
Laura is among a team of over 70 people from Johnston Carmichael, a gold sponsor of Kiltwalk, taking part in the Edinburgh event. Her colleagues are supporting a diverse range of charities including Alzheimer Scotland, SSPCA, and NSPCC Scotland.
Johnston Carmichael has been a gold sponsor of Kiltwalk for almost 10 years as part of its commitment to the communities in which its people live and work.
